Hi, we’re Zvezdana and Nancy, and we’ve set up this blog to document our research for a new book about how graphic design relates to other disciplines.
What is interdisciplinary graphic design? How do we teach it in school? How do we do it at work? Where is it in the culture around us? We believe that or profession is advanced by staying true to the basics on the one hand, while creating new hybrid forms, tools and practices on the other.
We started thinking about interdisciplinary graphic design back in 2004, as students in the MFA graphic design program at MICA. Together, we designed a class called Fashion Graphics, where students from various majors worked together to make and market their own product collections. In 2010, as “snowmaggedon” raged across America, we presented a paper on the matter at the CAA conference in Chicago. Alas, it was only a poster presentation, but it was there, based on the feedback we got, that we started toying around with the idea of a book. So here it is, our research on the subject, as we build this book together.
