The introduction traces a history of disciplines and follows up by a &#8220;defence of interdisciplinarity.&#8221; It&#8217;s a great read at about 18 pages.<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s the pdf of the introduction:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/idd.stojmirovic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/joe_moran.pdf\">joe_moran<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are my notes in reading this introduction:<\/p>\n<p>11\/17\/11<br \/>\nJoe Moran, Interdisciplinarity, Routlege\u2026.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two meanings of discipline: body of knowledge, and obedience\/order (2)<\/li>\n<li>hierarchical in nature, from latin <em>disciplina,\u00a0<\/em> meaning taking orders from an elder<\/li>\n<li>the term &#8220;discipline&#8221; is &#8220;caught up in questions about the relationship between knowledge and power.&#8221; (2)<\/li>\n<li>funny Roberta Frank on &#8220;fields&#8221; as cows and mud, versus &#8220;discipline&#8221; as enshrined, clean\u2026 (3)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classical division \u2014<\/strong>Aristotle&#8217;s order: theology\/mathematics\/physics, then ethics\/politics, and finally the arts\/engineering\/poetics (4); assigning of value \u2014\u00a0more and less esteemed disciplines<\/li>\n<li>Modern era: universities and states<\/li>\n<li>Late Middle Age \u2014\u00a0universities of Salerno, Bologna, Paris, Oxford and Cambridge replace medieval schools; discipline starts to mean <em>profession, <\/em>such as medicine, law and theology (5)<\/li>\n<li>However until 18 C. there was a core curriculum of <em>liberal arts<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>trivium <\/em>(logic, grammar, rhetoric)<\/li>\n<li><em>quadrivium\u00a0 <\/em>(arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music)<\/li>\n<li>University from latin <em>universitias, <\/em>meaning &#8220;universal&#8221; or &#8220;whole&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The Enlightenment (17, 18 c) pushed disciplines \u2014 reason-driven, all about instituting methodologies; this agreed with the overlapping <em>scientific revolution <\/em>(16, 17c) <em>Copernicus, Newton, Gallileo, etc<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Parallel tendencies to be holistic and\u00a0 yet subdivide into disciplines \u2014 through encyclopedias (7)<\/li>\n<li>Giambattista VIco (18 c) early promoter of interdisciplinary (7)<\/li>\n<li>Kant (18 c) privileges reason through philosphy<\/li>\n<li>Early duality between specialized and liberal arts education (10)<\/li>\n<li>Comte argues for applying scientific method to other areas of knowledge (11)<\/li>\n<li>Neitzsche critical (and lamenting) of the scientific man as superior to the philosopher (19 c) (12)<\/li>\n<li>Industrialized and technologized society demanded specializations (13)<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Our question: Where and since when do Ph. D. programs in design exist?<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Clark argues disciplines are discursive in that they promote certain languages and modes of thought, and exclude others (14)<\/li>\n<li>Epistemology \u2014 the study of knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Interdisciplinarity is about addressing problems that cannot be answered within existing disciplines (15)<\/li>\n<li>Interdisciplinarity is &#8221; any form of dialogue or interaction between two or more disciplines;\u00a0 the level, type, purpose and effect of this interaction remain to be examined&#8221; (16)<\/li>\n<li>Roland Barthes (1977: 155) &#8220;it begins effectively when the solidarity of the old disciplines breaks down\u2026in the interests of a new object and a new language neither of which has\u00a0 a place in the field of sciences that were to be brought peacefully together&#8221;\u2026.mutation<\/li>\n<li>politics of teaching (17)<\/li>\n<li>intellectually promiscuous (17)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This book is about interdisciplinary research on a broader scale.
